Hot to trot on super Saturday

Thousands lined Cardigan's streets at the end of April for what is being hailed as the best Barley Saturday ever.

The stallion show and parade attracted visitors and competitors from all over Wales, breaking records as the crowds gathered to enjoy the unique spectacle in blazing sunshine.

More than 60 stallions in tip-top condition were exhibited, and the title of supreme champion went to Duke's Hill Magnum, a Section A Welsh Mountain pony from mid Wales.

Section D Welsh Cob, Gellifach Llewellyn, owned by Emyr Davies of Newcastle Emlyn, shared second place with coloured stallion Dance with Wolves from Swansea.

In addition to the parade of stallions and heavy horse turnouts, there was a record number of vintage tractors, cars and engines.

Chairman Keith Davies has been involved with the show for several years, and was delighted with the turnout on the day.

"It's getting bigger every year, and this was the best Barley Saturday by far" he said.

"Last year was a record, and we didn't just break it, we smashed it on the Saturday.

"I couldn't believe it, hotels in town were fully booked on the Friday with people coming to the show.

"The gate was up by 80% on the show field, with almost 1,000 people there, and there must have been 5,000 people on the street itself.

"In this day and age, when everything is moving away from the town centre, it's fantastic to have something like this in the middle of town."

The annual Barley Saturday parade brings to life an old tradition which began in 1871, when local farmers would parade their stallions in the streets, and make arrangements about meeting mares on a tour of the countryside.
