International success: The Welsh contingent.

RIDERS from west Wales were among the Welsh team members who competed successfully in a British Show Pony Society Inter-national competition.

At the beginning of August nine Welsh riders travelled to Oatridge College, East Lothian near Edinburgh to compete with their working hunter ponies.

Ten teams competed: two each from England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The competition comprised three phases - dressage, working hunter pony and show jumping.

Nick James, from Mallards Reach Equestrian Training Centre, near Haverfordwest was chef d'equipe and chose the combinations on their season's form.

Harlech team which gained third place consisted of Jenny Yate on Sannan-Valley Sensation; Danielle Gardham on Bellevue Royal Prince; Jenna Davies on Butlers Alidan and Bethan Lewendon on Trewithian Woodrough.

The Snowdon team in eighth place comprised Kirsty Fudge on Llanarth Trilogy; Nicole George on Llanarth Donna; Jordan Roberts on Griannagh Marcus and Sian Thomas on Tansy III.

Anna Lewendon travelled as reserve with Pebbly Goose.

Competitors were also given an individual placing within the height section of their pony.

Jenna Davies and Kirsty Fudge achieved third place for ponies not exceeding 133cms and not exceeding 158cms respectively.

Danielle Gardham won the section for ponies not exceeding 153cms having come in the top three for each phase. Danielle's nine-year-old chestnut gelding was bred by Isobel Scourfield of Ludchurch, and they were ending an already successful week as they had qualified for Horse of the Year show en-route to Scotland.

Jenny Yate from Carmarthenshire, a fifth year vet student received her honours for the fourth time; she has competed in each of the four height sections on four different ponies at each host nation, all on her mother Barbara's home-bred ponies.

The team was helped a lot by Nick James and Lynne Lloyd leading up to the competition and during the weekend itself.

Anthony Williams (vice-chairman of BSPS Wales) and his wife Margaret. also travelled to Scotland to support the team.
