The first point-to-point races of the new season in south and west Wales have taken place.

A large and enthusiastic half-term holiday crowd enjoyed a glorious day out on a sunny early February afternoon at the Erw Lon course, near Llandysul.

The organisers had probably their most successful meeting ever held at the left-handed course, which has been in use for almost 30 years and is home to the Vale of Clettwr hunt.

Racing returns to Erw Lon on Saturday, March 1st for the Carmarthenshire Hunt event, followed by the ever popular Tivyside meeting at Cilwendeg, Boncath on Saturday, March 15th.

The South Pembrokeshire hunt will hold its races at Lydstep, near Tenby on Easter Monday, March 24th, and the Llandeilo Farmers will be at Cilwendeg on Sunday, April 6th.

The third division of the open maiden's race at Erw Lon was keenly contested, with Nathan Williams on the family-owned eight-year-old Irish-bred bay gelding, Country Cousin, leading. The eventual winner was Rhys Hughes on board another Irish-bred horse, the six-year-old Presenting Star, pictured immediately behind on the inside.
